Dangers of Lithium-Ion Batteries

As the government adds new restrictions to gas powered vehicles, electric bicycles and cars, have become a popular way for people to get around. All ages seem to be enjoying this new form of transportation. The energy efficiency and the environmental friendliness have become very attractive to many buyers. These vehicles tend to have a lower operating cost even if the original purchase is expensive.

However, there is a danger that comes with this fun new toy. Lithium-ion batteries power electric bicycles and they have a risk of overheating and lighting on fire. Once these batteries catch on fire it is extremely difficult to put them out. Although gasoline-powered vehicles also catch on fire and in some cases with more frequency, they are much easier to put out. Electrical Vehicles require copious amounts of water and manpower to put them out and it often takes up to an six hours to fully extinguish the fire.

Although people seem to be attracted to the lack of noise, this also causes an unforeseen issue. If other riders or pedestrians cannot hear the vehicle, they are more likely to end up in an accident.

Extreme weather conditions have not proved kind to electric vehicles. During major storms when salt water attacks the batteries, many have combusted.

Although there are many concerns with these types of vehicles, there are benefits and ultimately solutions to these problems.

If you are considering purchasing an electric bicycle, you must be sure that it is a reputable company with reliable batteries. The batteries need to have a Battery Management System which helps prevent overcharging. Be sure to purchase from a reputable manufacturer, never purchase after-market parts.

If you do purchase an electric bicycle, make sure to speak with a licensed electrician to inspect the outlet you will be using to charge the bicycle.

Charging Electric Vehicles

Many newer electric vehicles (EV) come with portable charging equipment to make it possible to charge your car with a standard 120-volt outlet. This type of charger, level 1, can charge approximately 40 miles overnight. This type of charger could be used for smaller vehicles or in a pinch.

To charge those same 40 miles in under 2 hours, you need a level 2 charger. This requires 240-volt outlet which most homeowners have professionally installed. Although there is a cost associated with having a licensed electrician install the proper outlet, it is the most convenient way to charge your EV. Over 80% of EV drivers charge their cars at home.

The fastest way to charge your EV is with DC charging, level 3, which is only available commercially. These chargers are capable of charging 10-20 miles per minute.

How to choose the right at-home EV charger

Once you have decided to purchase an electric vehicle, you then have to decide how to charge it. The most efficient way to charge is by purchasing a level 2 charger and having it professionally installed.

It is important to decide where to put the charger. Where do you park your car every night? Inside or outside? Just like all other electrical equipment, you must understand the weather elements affecting the charger.

Will you have one or two cars that need charging? Depending on the number of cars, you may need different cable lengths. Will you be charging both at the same time?

Although most level 2 chargers can give your car a full charge overnight, you still need to understand the size of the car’s battery, the ability of your outlet, and your EV’s onboard power supply. You may buy the most powerful charger on the market, but it may not be compatible with your new vehicle.

If you are purchasing an electric car, the only safe way to install the charger is with a licensed electrician. The charger is important to make sure your vehicle operates properly, but the safety of your home and its occupants must come first. Only a licensed electrician who inspects your entire system can ensure proper installation and compatibility.
