The summer can be a great time for friends and families to get together. Whether it is a barbecue or a pool party, you want to make sure that your outdoor set up and safe for everyone to enjoy. Some of the installation can be done by the homeowner, but if it is more complex, please consult a licensed electrician to make sure everything is safe and up to code.

Summer entertaining under the lights

When setting up lighting in your outdoor areas, it is important to consider what you are using the area for. Are you barbecuing? Are you entertaining?

If you are barbecuing, it is important that the lights are bright enough for cooking and food preparation. LED lights are a great option since they are energy-efficient and provide bright and focused lighting.

For entertaining, string lights have become very popular. Make certain that these lights are made for the outdoors and can withstand the elements. Many outdoor lights are made with aluminum or stainless steel which are resistant to rust and corrosion.

You can also choose the color temperature of your lights. Cool lights are better for cooking and provide an energizing feel while warm lights create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Before purchasing any outdoor lighting, check the packaging to make sure it is energy efficient and durable.

Outdoor sound systems

Although we all love our wireless speakers, for those that are looking for a more permanent outdoor sound system there are some great ones that are meant to withstand the outdoors for long periods of time. The best speakers have metal grilles, and sealed plastic enclosures. They are both water and bug resistant. Most high-quality outdoor speakers are not wireless, so a licensed electrician will need to run the wiring from the speakers to an amplifier.

Most outdoor speakers, if installed properly, can last for many years. It is important to make sure that the ones you purchase have good reviews and are adaptable to new technologies.

There are cheaper alternatives available that are wireless with amplifiers built in, but it is not recommended to leave these plugged in.

Electrical pool safety

Faulty pool wiring can cause unspeakable harm. Many do not think of electric association with pools. However, pool lighting, pumps and heaters are both powered by electric. As your pool ages, it is important to have your pool electrical inspected yearly.

If swimmers ever experience a tingling feeling, immediately exit the pool and don’t touch any metal on the way out. Due to unfortunate tragedies, pool safety features have been put in place to make sure no one else is injured. Annually, codes are updated to protect residents, families and friends.

To be safe, have a licensed electrician inspect and upgrade your wiring every year.
