Homeowners Now Considering Solar/Photovoltaic Power Systems

As storms increase in intensity, many homeowners are considering how to keep the power on during these events. Although utilities have upgraded significantly, some things cannot be prevented. Utilities, businesses and consumers are all looking for renewable sources of energy. Solar power has been used for years, but in many cases, the output has not been significant enough.

Photovoltaic systems take the energy captured by solar panels and convert it to usable energy. These can range in size from a small roof-top unit to a commercial size, feeding the electrical grid. A major concern for solar energy has always been the storage of energy once it’s collected. This system allows the energy to be stored in what is called a Battery Energy Storage System. This advanced technology allows for usage even when weather conditions do not comply.

The benefits of investing in a Photovoltaic system include: less dependency on the electrical grid, lower energy costs, resiliency and the environmental gain of using a renewable energy source.

Many companies have begun to produce these Photovoltaic systems including: Tesla, Panasonic, Generac, Enphase and more. This has allowed for wider availability and lower costs to the consumer.

Consumers Considering Solar

If a homeowner is considering going solar, some important things must come into consideration. Is the home suitable for solar? Can the rooftop get direct sunlight or is there tree cover? Solar panels perform best on south-facing roofs with a slope between 15 and 40 degrees. It is important to consider the age of the roof and if it will need replacement soon.

Before going solar it is important to check the mapping services that have already identified areas where solar is available. There are cooperative programs that are available so groups of homeowners can get together to purchase solar.

The cost to go solar has dropped considerably over the last 15 years. The costs of the panels have dropped as well as the cost of installation, permits and inspection. There are financing options available for going solar while others engage in solar leases where the solar company owns the panels and consumers buy back the electricity. There are tax credits and incentives available and can be found through: https://www.energy.gov/eere/solar/homeowners-guide-federal-tax-credit-solar-photovoltaics.

There is a wealth of information regarding solar, however, there are also many disingenuous companies involved in the industry. It is imperative that consumers do their homework before investing in a photovoltaic system. Prior to considering solar, speak with a local professional and visit: www.energy.gov.
