So many look forward to nicer weather, but few consider that pests can cause power outages just like a large snowstorm. Pests make their way into our homes seeking shelter or warmth. No one likes a mouse in the house, but the electrical problems are often overlooked.

Chewing on wires: Many rodents like mice and rats are known to chew on wires. This can cause damage to the insulation and expose the conductive material inside. This can lead to short circuits, electrical fires and other safety hazards. Squirrels are also notorious for chewing on electrical wires. They look for enclosed spaces like attics where they often find exposed wires and cause electrical shorts.

Nesting in electrical boxes: Squirrels and insects may build nests in electrical boxes or around wiring. Their nests can cause overheating, block airflow and increase the risk of electrical fires. Th nesting materials are flammable, but they may also bring in food and create droppings that can interfere with proper functioning of electrical components. Birds can often nest outside on utility poles or wires leading to homes. Those nests can cause fires and malfunctions.

Corrosion: Some pests produce urine or feces that contain corrosive substances. When these substances encounter electrical components, they can cause electrical failures.

Many of these pests are nocturnal and the homeowner doesn’t realize there is a problem until it is too late. Be on the lookout for clues like flickering lights and blinking appliances. If this occurs it is important to look through the house for frayed wires and droppings near outlets.

The only way to prevent electrical problems due to pests is to inspect the home regularly. Check for nests, holes in the siding and large dirt mounds surrounding the house. Make sure to seal any holes or openings you see. Store food properly and close garbage cans tightly. It is always a good idea to employ a pest company to help prevent and stop any pest infestations.

Once you have found a pest infestation, you must get a pest company to help you remove any remnants before you electrician can tend to the electrical failure.
